I think a reemergence of English (as opposed to British) identity would be healthy. This is far from a right wing idea, the likes of Billy Bragg are also pushing it.

Seriously though, a shared sense of common identity would be good. It really does seem that there are 2 Englands sometimes, although whether the faultlines are provincial/urban, educated/uneducated or simply young/old I'm not sure.

Pride is for accomplishments. Being born in a place is not an accomplishment.

There is a different sense of pride which is understood to indicate a sense of worth, belonging, identification. Like Gay Pride which does not indicate having achieved same sex desire or pride in your parents, spouse, child which does not indicate deserving credit for them.

The feeling of “within these borders, in these towns and cities, amongst these people...we call this home.” This sense is worth keeping. That can remain honestly intact inside larger “homes” as well - planet, galaxy and so on...

This is what Kwame Appiah calls Rooted Cosmopolitanism. It's the only hope, I think.

Not sure decline is bad, or that national identity is "ideal" in the long term. Post-nationalism may be better if we can reach it. Being able to take a job anywhere, move where you like and can afford to, avoiding arbitrary trade (and real) wars etc. seems cool.

I agree. The idea of the nation was one of the greatest ever conceived. This one idea allows millions of people to trust each other and work together. Amazing.

It is (evolutionarily) natural for us to feel pride in our clan/nation but irrational. Complete strangers, most of whom lived long ago, are as foreign to us as any other. It’s a small step from nationalism to xenophobia.

I call it 'pragmatic patriotism': this is the polity wherein I live, & my fortunes are therefore, to a degree, yolked to it. If I talk it up, promote & support it (but not blindly or unconditionally), then I do better, if I do the opposite then I do worse, so I choose the former.

Feeling patriotic is not inconsistent with appreciating the strengths and achievements of other countries. People should be invested in the idea of making their country a better place to be. Nationalism is somewhat different.
