I don't agree about the New Atheists but I do think questioning everything and accepting that knowledge is always provisional and making efforts to disprove things we thought were true are central to science.

I’ll exclude Harris, Dennett, & Hitchens from my original claim. But I’ve witnessed it w/Krauss, Shermer, Dawkins, Pinker, and at times N.G. Tyson. And it pains me because I’m fans of virtually all of them.

      Scientism in Pinker?

That appears to be an uncharitable reading of this which is much more nuanced and could not justly be called 'scientism' in the sense that it is criticised. Believing science already has all the answers.https://newrepublic.com/article/114127/science-not-enemy-humanities …

I’ve read that one and I agree. But these people are human beings too and capable of the same mistakes we all make. I don’t think Pinker is as bad as Krauss tho. In my view, Krauss makes science seem ideological to me, which is something I thought was impossible.

That's what the one you posted is responding to tho and I don't understand it. Pinker is humble here. This is the 'scientism' he defends and I am with him.pic.twitter.com/U2Ru3ZBATe

That’s great, but he’s also redefining the term. There’s a reason why the term scientism is a pejorative. He can say all that w/o calling it scientism and defending its meaning.

Yes, I'd rather he didn't do that, tbh. Tho I do agree with him that the accusation of 'scientism' is most often a criticism of bringing science into anything rather than to overconfident claims about the perfection of science which don't tend to be made by scientists.

That is true. I think the word Scientism can be tossed out in the same way that people throw out words like racist, sexist, islamaphobe, etc. it ends an otherwise productive conversation

OK! We seem to agree more than disagree. I must now go and walk my dogs before it gets dark. Thanks for the chat!
