Mostly people criticise ideologies on the basis of bad things being done in its name and its not terribly helpful to point out that people subscribe to it without doing bad things. We know that & that's why the distinction between ideas & people is so important to maintain.https://twitter.com/StphnHwrdJns/status/1002449828608135168 …

So yesterday we published an article that deals with the distinction between prejudice against Muslims and against Islam. As that debate is in the news (again!), today is going to be a short thread on our data. "We know that". You and I know that. Most people don't seem to. It is very easy to stigmatize a whole group by trotting out the misbehavior of its worst members. This is my favorite long-form explanation of this phenomenon:http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/05/12/weak-men-are-superweapons/ …

I was thinking the same thing and was trying to get it into a single (hopefully) smart tweet, then I read that article and all I can say now is: Thanks for the read, that's almost exactly what I meant.

Yes, but this is an entirely different problem to the importance of separating people from ideas and being able to criticise ideas WITHOUT assuming all members of a group subscribe to them.

I very much agree. But one of the things in that article I hadn't considered that articulated before, is that criticizing an idea can have members of the group that have that idea, assume the criticism is about all of them.

Well, yes, but we still need to be able to criticise conservative ideas even tho some conservatives are reasonable, Christian ideas even tho many Christians are etc. This is why we need to separate ideas and people. Many conservatives support universal healthcare, for example

Absolutely, not arguing against that at all. What's a new thing for me to consider more deeply, is that people may tend to identify with their tribe first, and come to its defense when there is criticism on issues they themselves may not identify with but their group does.pic.twitter.com/JL24mqgzgX
