Mostly people criticise ideologies on the basis of bad things being done in its name and its not terribly helpful to point out that people subscribe to it without doing bad things. We know that & that's why the distinction between ideas & people is so important to maintain.https://twitter.com/StphnHwrdJns/status/1002449828608135168 …

So yesterday we published an article that deals with the distinction between prejudice against Muslims and against Islam. As that debate is in the news (again!), today is going to be a short thread on our data. "We know that". You and I know that. Most people don't seem to. It is very easy to stigmatize a whole group by trotting out the misbehavior of its worst members. This is my favorite long-form explanation of this phenomenon:http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/05/12/weak-men-are-superweapons/ …

Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking, but it seems to me that this is one of the key factors polarizing our politics. It's a big deal. We need to make sure we actually SAY that unrepresentative cases are unrepresentative, or we risk adding to the problem.

We need to keep pointing out that liberal Muslims & liberal Christians exist, yes, but we must be able to criticise Islam for the blasphemy & apostasy laws related to it and Christianity for its influence on birth control & abortion restrictions/bans. These are related.

Yes, I think that's important. But I also responded to your comment without first seeing the context, and I need to apologize for that. Your comment makes more sense to me in context.

In particular, I think you're right to say that a distinction between people and ideas is important.
