Obviously, it's great when people embrace the 'no compulsion in religion' bit but we do still need to be able to talk about the 13 countries which have the death penalty for apostasy from Islam & why they have that rule. Where it comes from?

"We know that". You and I know that. Most people don't seem to. It is very easy to stigmatize a whole group by trotting out the misbehavior of its worst members. This is my favorite long-form explanation of this phenomenon:http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/05/12/weak-men-are-superweapons/ …

Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking, but it seems to me that this is one of the key factors polarizing our politics. It's a big deal. We need to make sure we actually SAY that unrepresentative cases are unrepresentative, or we risk adding to the problem.
-
We need to keep pointing out that liberal Muslims & liberal Christians exist, yes, but we must be able to criticise Islam for the blasphemy & apostasy laws related to it and Christianity for its influence on birth control & abortion restrictions/bans. These are related.

Yes, I think that's important. But I also responded to your comment without first seeing the context, and I need to apologize for that. Your comment makes more sense to me in context.
-
In particular, I think you're right to say that a distinction between people and ideas is important.

I promise I will slow down the next time I read one of your tweets

(1/2) It's often crossed my mind that the extreme views - "all religions [or ideologies] are inherently evil" and "all religions [or ideologies] inherently aim for the same positive end" - rather insultingly ignore every idea actually held by believers/idealists...
-
(2/2) ...it's reasonable to say that the ideas inherent in Marxism, Christianity, Islam, nihilism, and Buddhism might naturally indicate different behaviours, different standards of treatment of others, etc. Not "better" or "worse" necessarily, but one can't deny the differences.

Absolutely bizarre thread. Paraphrased: “Criticism of Islam is used as a politically correct way to show apprehension about Muslims”. So criticism of ideas is just a facade for prejudice directed at those who believe such ideas... bizarre.
