That’s true but let’s at least acknowledge that a LOT of actual bigots and racists use that defense of “I’m just against Islam, not Muslims”. That’s an often missed crucial point whenever someone goes on a tirade explaining why “islamophobia” is a bad word.

Some people are dishonest, yes, but that doesn't mean we should stop separating ideas and people! If someone says 'I support gender equality' but then doesn't support gender equality, we see the problem as not living up to stated claims, not that the claim is bad.

It is human nature to require (or at least, desire) conformity to certain ideals as a pre-requisite for social interaction. Like a secret handshake. People who don't conform in this way telegraph their untrustworthiness. This is mostly unconscious.
