No, there are good sources on the emergence of this over the 16th century. Before that, it was not even recognised that race actually existed. They believed people varied in colour due to climate - sun tans. There was amazement when a mixed race baby born in England wasn't white

As far as I know, yes. They switched from prejudice on grounds of religion & nationality to grounds of race as well as switching from the subordinate continent to the dominant one. Racism is neither better nor worse than nationalism or religious oppression.

It is worth bearing in mind that European modernity was also the time & place where slavery, racism, misogyny & homophobia etc were recognised as wrong. It's true oppression existed in this period & place but also true it existed in every other period & this one addressed them.
