There has been much, much reading, taking in & retaining of texts within their field but seemingly zero focus on understanding an objection being made & responding to it relevantly. Being able to do this needs to be a core requirement for degrees at all levels.

It's not even dishonest, on many occasions. I'm sure it's not. It just seems it's never been pointed out to them that you can't answer '2+2=4' with 'No, because bunnies are fluffy."

They're focused on the grade not on the learning. Most often grades mean reproducing what the Prof says not actually thinking for themselves. They are parrots not independent thinkers.
