I agree with your sentiments, though I think Helen's point here was blocking because of attitude should be possible and still maintain heterodoxy. Hopefully, other people with a healthier attitude are around to air the same or similar opinions without the vitriol.

Precisely. Don't waste time trying to have a productive convo with rude or dishonest people when you could be talking about the same things with reasonable & sincere people. This is something people have been telling me for years & I've been bad at it. Got to do it.

We will have to profoundly disagree then. My prediction is that at some point you will ask yourself "how could X have happened?" And your surprise should not be forgivable, nor distress passed injustice.

Don't know what the last bit means but I'll live with the consequences of blocking anyone who can't have a reasoned & civil conversation/disagreement. I co-wrote this about it.https://areomagazine.com/2018/04/07/freedom-of-speech-and-the-fallacy-of-demanding-to-be-heard/ …

I'll give it a read after work. That being said what I'm referring is this: https://www.google.es/amp/s/www.deccanchronicle.com/amp/world/america/091116/us-elections-shock-tears-in-clinton-camp-as-trump-surges-ahead.html?source=images … my impression is that people will take your advice as an excuse to not listen and isolate themselves. These people tears are due to that.

No-one can take any of my words as advice not to listen and isolate themselves. I argue the opposite frequently &, in fact, my own followers are widely diverse. Honest people can tell the difference between people disagreeing with them & people being dishonest or abusive jerks.

I also talked about this here: https://conatusnews.com/twitter-productive-conversation/ … It's easy to both have widely ideologically diverse Twitter conversations AND refuse to engage with abusive or dishonest people by simply understanding the difference between disagreeing & being a timewasting arsehole.pic.twitter.com/9olw5l0aA8

Honestly, if I set up an echo chamber in which what is echoed is not ideas but civility and reasonableness in the presence of different ideas, I will be quite happy with that.

I wrote here about the value of arguing with ideological extremists (although I no longer think the concept of the 'centre' is ideal) and I still believe in that. However, I am no longer engaging with random dishonest, snarky or abusive tweeters.https://areomagazine.com/2016/12/14/the-value-of-arguing-with-extremists-building-a-moderate-center/ …
