Sometimes, I really wish I could resort to feminist tactics and accuse men condescending to me of mansplaining and talking over my lived experience.

I am more than happy for people to explain statistics to me but if they explain that they can't answer my question about whether choices made have anything to do with the wage gap, they can't then claim statistics to be of any further use in answering that question.

If you claim that the only relevant variables in gender earnings statistics is gender and nothing that comes in later than gender is relevant (and so choices are not) you'll have to accept that you cannot use those statistics to claim that the cause is discrimination.

The conversation essentially ends there. There's no point telling me that I can no longer discuss the wage gap because 'I hope you understand now that statistics are hard' when you have invalidated your own argument for causes at the same time.

Many people explain statistics and economics to me when needed because these are not areas I am knowledgeable about but those doing so in good faith manage not to be condescending arseholes. It really isn't difficult not to be. I often manage to explain things without being so.

I'm afraid I told him that I was muting him because he was not saying anything worthwhile but he wasn't to feel bad. Clarity of thought and communication are hard.

BTW, I have a book recommendation on economics - it's comprehensive yet easy to comprehend as it's pitched at those who are total strangers to the subject.

https://www.amazon.com/Economix-Economy-Works-Doesnt-Pictures/dp/0810988399 … For the record; I *hate* comic books, and yet I enjoyed this immensely. It does something very few others do; it explains how we got to where we are now, so you can understand how and why the system is the way it is.

I should read it but I am uninterested in economics.
