With the evidence that we are overlapping populations. It's not at all difficult to understand and it refutes both blank slatism and the claim that men and women have different natural roles in life. https://twitter.com/Trunkulent/status/1000981224519815169 …

If you find it difficult to grasp the concept of overlapping populations, think of height. (British) men are on average 5 ft 9 and women are 5 ft 5. That is only a 7% difference. Many women exist who are taller than the average man & many men who are shorter than average woman.

No-one says to me 'You can't be 5 ft 9. That's a man's height' because that is clearly ludicrous. I am 5 ft 9 regardless of statistical averages. The same is true of interests & abilities. Many women exist who are 5 ft 9 & many exist who want to work in tech.

Nevertheless, we shouldn't be surprised if 80% of the people who are 5 ft 9 and 80% of people who are tech engineers are men. (I don't know the percentages). This is all that overlapping populations means. It is a fact that men & women differ on average but vary as individuals.pic.twitter.com/fY6wZNh4nZ

Yep. The blank slatist position would be that men and women are exactly as tall on average, which is false. But the essentialist position would be that no tall women or short men are "real" women or men, which is absurd.

I love this thread. It's also crazy to me that it's necessary as this all seems so obvious (but I guess its not to many). Blank slatists and essentialist have more in common than either would like to admit...confusing groups w/ individuals...

Yeah, far too many mistake averages as some all-encompassing mandate. Funnily enough, the same people that seem like such staunch essentialists also tend to levy complaints about how men are being feminized and none of this would've happened if women couldn't vote.

That's because they don't actually think of groups in terms of averages, but in terms of prototypes. Those are two very different things. Averages show a trend in a distribution, prototypes are used as a meter of judgment.
