And if the activists causation model is wrong? If they're accusing entire fields of harassment and overt discrimination when there are other explanations for unequal outcomes, that doesn't seem very productive to me.

It seems likely but the actual research seems to indicate that we know less than we think about what those differences actually are, objectively, and what we think we know is often wrong. Again, we need more and better studies.

It's a counter-factual. It seems very unlikely, but it may be the case that, given identical initial conditions (ie. boys and girls were exactly reversed culturally) women would become engineers in droves, but that doesn't imply hostile culture.
