I think Lucas’s difficulty is the tension between valuing human flourishing as the highest good, while at the same time recognizing the catastrophic effect human existence has had on other living things on earth. The answer is there’s no good answer to this.

No easy answers, no great hash tags, mantras, or manipulations to be had. Just the persistence of life. In the history of life most ecosystems collapse due to the astounding successes of their apex organisms, which make way for the next. If it was family r we wouldn’t be here.

Indeed, rights are a human cultural construct. Their existence depends on the collaboration of institutions (top down) and the public (grassroots) in a mostly implicit social contract. Note that this is an atheist conception of rights, theists have a different one.
