I'm experiencing a new thing where people who follow because they appreciate my criticism of one kind of waffly woo, ideologically-motivated conspiracy theory or cultural constructivism, are then shocked and surprised that I have no patience for theirs.

For anyone who is unclear where I stand on things: I am primarily a liberal humanist - this means I value freedom, universality, equal opportunities and kindness. I am a skeptic - this means I require evidence for things to believe in them.

If you appreciate my criticisms of postmodern woo but then expect me to have patience with theological or metaphysical woo, you will be disappointed. If you like my opposition to left-wing identity politics but then expect me to appreciate right-wing identity politics, hard luck.

I don't need everybody else to be a liberal humanist or a skeptic or to only talk to me about things which accord with that but at least recognise that I am one.

I am direly conflicted between humanist assertions of rights and the ecological reality of being an organism on Earth. Not one life form in the history of the universe we now inhabit will provide any evidence we have a right to live. Please help me with this conundrum.
-
I don't know what that means. Rights are a human concept.

I think Lucas’s difficulty is the tension between valuing human flourishing as the highest good, while at the same time recognizing the catastrophic effect human existence has had on other living things on earth. The answer is there’s no good answer to this.
-
No easy answers, no great hash tags, mantras, or manipulations to be had. Just the persistence of life. In the history of life most ecosystems collapse due to the astounding successes of their apex organisms, which make way for the next. If it was family r we wouldn’t be here.

Three tweets to make a clear point eh? Challenge accepted....

The best film ever made is Escape To Victory *tweet 1*

Evidence: it's about war *&* football. That probably seals the deal but there's more. *tweet 2*

It stars both Michael Caine & Max Von Sydow. But also, crucially, John Wark of Ipswich Town FIame. Oh, & that Pele bloke. And Ossie. And Bobby Moore. I think we can both agree I've made my point spectacularly within the agreed conditions. Block me at your peril.
-
Ah. I wrote "flame" instead of "fame". Mute or block is now understandable.

Evidence: While a war movie, it isn't about war, but the descent into madness. This is also the theme of twitter. And there is no football. That definitely seals the deal.
-
It stars people that actually went insane during the making of the movie, deteriorating health, storms, drugs, bizarre sound effects, and a puppy. Also just like twitter. And inspired an award winning documentary about the insanity. As twitter surely will.

Ha ha, Helen, it amazes me how behind the curve you are. It’s like you wake up to Twitter some years after everyone else and ask why you’re wasting your time with a whole bunch of conversations that most others would realise are going nowhere from the first reply.
