This is the vital difference. We can be deeply moved by art in the form of poetry or epic narratives w/out claiming them to be true. Scientists have no lesser an appreciation for these than anyone else. Blurring the distinction between 'meaningful' & 'true' is a problem.

A lot of scientists (Dawkins eg, the Jordan Peterson of a different crowd) have a hugely lesser appreciation. It's evident in this reductive quote he's a sophist when it comes to grasping the significance of narrative in terms of what is known now and can be known scientifically.

No, I don't think so. Have a look at Unweaving the Rainbow. Don't know what the last sentence means.

Ok, I haven't read that, but this quote is terrible, and I see it everyday from pedantry, clearly expressed in that angle of Peterson criticism. It's shallow.

Actually, I am being uncharitable, my bad. The quote is not so bad at all, would agree with it. Was responding to the anti-myth zeitgeist/backlash, again apologies for my poor initial read of the quote.

Two last thoughts, I don't think anyone who's into Jung (or
@jordanbpeterson or whoever we're talking about would agree w/ "myths are just as valid an approach to the truth as science" so it's a strawman.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

Meh, he may not be expressing that right, he's def problematically loose at times, and that's worth criticism. But he is a science dude not a science denier, least the stuff I've seen. He tries to augment, or tie the myths to evolutionary psych, big 5 etc.

That's inherently a sticky wicket and he's bound to make tons of mistakes, but the interesting part to me is someone is trying to connect the two. Just the effort of attempting that is worth a lot more that 99% of social science imo.

So yeah, maybe worthy of a critique there- know him and Sam Harris couldn't seem to get on the same page and think it's about this, and I think there may be something going on in fleshing out that issue, not sure just guessing, so I will have to check that out.

Newtonian truth vs Darwinian truth. It can be resolved easily with, 'This thing which is not true is, nevertheless, helpful.' Having your cake and eating it.
