PSA that in the UK university system individual academics are not able to offer deadline extensions. A module leader almost never has the authority to tell a student 'you can hand in a week late'. I know its different in the USA & I think ppl are getting the wrong impression.

Seeing alarming tweets about 'cruel' professors not giving extensions & really think we need to be explicit about who can and can't act within the UK system as its clearly not common knowledge

I wouldn’t be commenting uninvestigated on process in another university never mind another system! 😳

Varies among institutions in Oz, but generally module leaders have limited discretion to offer short extensions under certain conditions (e.g. a couple of days), but longer grace periods typically require some kind of central application.

Oz system is a hybrid of a UK and US systems, it seems to me.

That surprises me indeed, how is the process then?

in the UK teaching and assessment are (nominally) separated - often the people teaching aren't the (only) people marking, and extensions/deadlines are provided by a separate body (varies according to situation) to ensure equality and parity across the university.

This has been the case in all three UK institutions I’ve worked for. It was an aye opener for me to find out haw little control lecturers had over their modules compared to what I had in North America.

During these times, our university is allowing self certification for extenuating circumstances and has changed the normal process, so that extensions can be given much more easily.

At @UniNorthants we're allowed to offer 2 week extensions at our individual discretion, which is the 1st UK institution I've worked at which allows that and is a relief! Makes things much easier. Longer extensions require mitigating circumstances form & approval but that seems ok.

I've applied for mitigating circumstances twice (bereavement and illness) and it was accepted no problem.
