Souche = stump. When Anglo media translates it, they often go with "old stock Quebecois", but the term is far more racially charged. "Québecois de souche" is about purity of bloodlines - anyone whose family doesn't date to New France. Especially not non-white Quebecois. #cdnpoli

I am reminded of what Pierre Elliott Trudeau said before the 1980 Referendum after Rene Levesque mocked his middle name for being too Anglophone. Let me reiterate: the term "québecois de souche", as used by that woman, is so exclusionary that Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the most Quebecois of Canadian giants, does not count as québecois de souche. And neither does his son, Justin.

We may get smug when comparing ourselves to the US, but nowhere is immune to racism, that's an ongoing fight. You'll hear "Canada didn't have slavery" (a distorted half-truth) used as an excuse not to examine historical and ongoing wrongs. @BashirMohamed writes often about this.

Absolutely. The erasure of non-Francophone and non-white pre-Conquest inhabitants of New France is part of the exclusionary ethno-nationalism lurking behind "québecois de souche".

I am French-Canadian, and my wife is from Québec. In this context she was simply referring to native born Québecers. Her exact words were “Are you intolerant towards native born Québecers?” It doesn’t do anyone any good to distort her words just because you don’t agree with them
Quebecois de souche is a nationalist term & literally refers to Quebecois with pure French-Canadian ancestry. There are Quebecois Nationalist white supremacist groups that call themselves this. It's not distorting words. She knows what she was saying.
