Yesterday we met up with #RFA Tidespring. Challenging conditions prevented a full first Replenishment At Sea (RAS) trial taking place but initial lines were successfully passed and useful experience gained by both ships. #QNLZAtSeapic.twitter.com/JfyRX7nON3

When RFA Bayleaf RAS'd QE2 in 1982 conditions were challenging too, but, I suppose, it was war!pic.twitter.com/3Ulbxtz53D

Given its not a war, then trying to do something incredibly complex for the first time with 2 brand new ships weighing in at a combined 100k tonnes plus in very bad weather isn't massively sensible. Like having your first driving lesson ever and doing it on the motorway...

How do you pass the lines? Are they shot over or taken by a boat?

From memory there's an attachment for the SA80 that let's you fire a big yellow sausage thing that has a line attached to it. You then use that to pull a slightly bigger line over and so on until you've got a cable across.

You really need some planes on your flight deck... Can't you break out a Swordfish and range her on the flight deck?
