. @h1bennett asked about reading habits at sea. With a large fiction library in addition to text books used by the 10% of the Ship’s Company studying for GCSEs and A-Levels, there is plenty of it taking place on QNLZ. More below, in replies. Most of our 1000+ library books are provided by the Naval Education & Trg Service (NETS), with ‘freecycling’ donations from Ship’s Company adding to that. We’ve definitely had a #cricket fan on board... Half an hour in a good book is a mini-break for the mind. @NelsonElearnpic.twitter.com/6KrZhnCMsI

Books are passed around, including reference books (a number of people are studying for degrees). E-readers are liked because of storage space constraints, however e-books are less compatible with sharing and library remains popular - esp at sea when phone signal is lost!

Reasons for reading: personal development; professional development (eg periodicals and trade publications, military history, politics, cultural awareness); inspiration (sport, travel) and simple escapism. Half an hour in a book is a mini-break for the mind.

BZ on the response QE folks (much appreciated). Interesting you have a big cricket fan on board. He or she might have designs on what your flight deck might also be used for. I take it you have a dedicated library, books in wardrooms, manuals and private books across the ship?

Yes. Manuals etc in Depts, text books via Education Dept / distance learning providers, personal book collections in most Mess Decks and then a ship-wide library accessible to all.

Recommendations are definitely passed on. I read Black Box Thinking (Matthew Syed) as a result of @fightingsailor ‘s endorsement!

Agree with Sir Humphrey @pinstripedline on John Winton books. An entertaining and reassuring familiarity to his ‘Yes Minister’ style historical account of the Navy. ‘We Joined The Navy’ and ‘We Saw The Sea’ (plus sequels) well worth a look. @fightingsailor you would enjoy these!
