Must be a very young merlin, not used to being in the lead. Sometimes you need to jerk it back in to teach it.

Yes - it’s called HIFR (helicopter in flight refuelling) used on smaller decks when deck is either too small or blacked by another aircraft. This is just training practice and a regular currency requirement amongst others they need to achieve.
