Original concept was to include catapult and arrestors to launch and retrieve conventional jets. Now viability is VSTOL dependant, hence successful sole sourcing of F35’s from the US. A complex aircraft, expensive to buy and maintain, and it looks like we still don’t have them.

The STOVL LiftFan means a smaller weapon bay, less fuel capacity and ~$115M price tag compared with the less complex $89M CTOL variant. Factor in cost of ownership, spares, maintenance, training/manpower, reliability/down time and eyes will water. Hope we don’t lose one in combat
