Forgive my ignorance, but what is the big flap behind the cockpit? Does having it open on take off, not slow the aircraft down or is that what it’s meant to do?

There is a vertical lift fan right behind the pilot on the F35B. The door allows air to be sucked in a pushed down creating vertical thrust. The door retracts after take-off.
