Is this to keep the deck clear for other operations? Otherwise I'd have though it would be quicker, simpler and safer to do a rotors running refuel on the deck.

I can see this might be of use if the flight deck is full, but it must be faster to land and refuel (rotors spinning) than the method used there! What else am I missing? PS. Good flying though.

Helicopter In Flight Refuelling (HIFR) is normally conducted by a helicopter that is unable to land on the supplying vessel either through not being cleared for that deck or the deck not being available for technical reasons. Practising the evolution is vital for the crews.

The team of trainees from RNAS Culdrose are getting used to living, working & flying at sea before being awarded their ‘wings’. They’ll take all the skills they’ve learnt flying with
#824NAS or in our hi-tech simulators & apply them whilst operating from a moving deck@HMSQNLZpic.twitter.com/76GmlbltBK
