I thought that honor went to HMS Belfast.
Our predecessor was not part of Operation Overlord.
However HMS WARSPITE, a Queen Elizabeth Class Battleship, was the first to open fire on D-Day in support of landings by the British 3rd Div on Sword Beach.
She is also the most battle honoured ship in the @RoyalNavy

My Grandad served on HMS Warspite, and HMS Hood.......

Hi Gary, you may know but your Granddad served on two of the RN's finest! HMS Warspite was arguably the most famous battleship that ever floated. Spanned two world wars. Start of it's fame was the Battle of Jutland. Present at a lot of major engagements too. Sorry it was scrapped

HMS Neptune was sunk in the Med. in 1941.

According to Belfast’s veterans, as recorded in my book Firing on Fortress Europe, HMS Orion beat her to it by a few seconds. We’ll probably never know for sure.
