    What is genocide? A Polish lawyer, Raphael Lemkin, first devised the concept of genocide in response to atrocities perpetrated against the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire, which took place between 1915 and 1923.

    In 2003, a civil war began in Darfur between black African farmers and the nomadic Arab population. The Sudanese Government supported Arab militia who've destroyed villages and murdered thousands of people. These atrocities have been condemned as genocide by the ICC.

    Pastor Martin Niemöller is best known for writing 'First They Came' - one of the most famous poems about the Holocaust - but he is a complicated figure. Initially an antisemitic Nazi supporter, his views changed when he was imprisoned in a concentration camp.

    The Sonderkommando were work units in Nazi death camps, consisting of prisoners who were forced to work in the crematoria. They were responsible for a number of duties, including leading victims to the gas chambers and removing their bodies after they'd been gassed.

    Sudan will hand its former president Omar al-Bashir to the International Criminal Court. The ICC issued indictments against al-Bashir for three counts of genocide on 12 July 2010. Up to 2.6 million people are still displaced in Darfur.
