“We know our city has long been in the business of making big dreams come true,” Gorton said. “Let’s dream big Lexington.”

Gorton said they will need to focus on local job growth and job training. A land swap with UK means 250 acres are now available for new jobs

“For the next few years we know that city budgets will be tight,” Gorton said. But that doesn’t mean the city can’t continue to dream.

“We are considered a national model,” said Gorton of Lexington’s merged nonpartisan government.

“I know our citizens want us to dream big dreams,” Gorton said.

“Let’s start this term with a pledge to work together,” Gorton said to the council. Gorton also thanked past mayors.

“UK and the city of Lexington are walking hand in hand into the future,” Gorton said.

Vice Mayor Steve Kay said the council is ready to work with Gorton: “This council has the will to make this an even better community.”

The project is made possible through a new program that allows VA to use under-utilized land and buildings for new programs.

The city’s affordable housing program has created or preserved more than 1,430 affordable housing units, Gray said.

Mayor Jim Gray, in his last public appearance as mayor, said the affordable housing fund exists for projects just like this one.

Congressman Andy Barr said the project will help end veterans homelessness.”This is an inspirational public-private partnership.”

The VA has done this in other areas but this is the first of its kind in Kentucky, Wiedemann said.

Holly Wiedemann, of AU Associates, said the veterans who live in the new development will have complete access to services on the campus.

The city has made a dent in the number of homeless veterans, particularly among those who are chronically homeless.

The project will renovate and re-use two existing buildings on the Leestown campus as well as new town homes on the campus.
