It was an ancient human ritual throughout history yes. So there is still a special element to it. But like everything else - it becomes corrupt over time.

It's like any ancient ritual - the masses try to corrupt it. And those stalwart conservatives try to preserve it. I'm okay committing to her with a marriage contract. Actually, ironically, she was okay not getting married. I'm the dumb dumb who said "no, let's be traditional".
