One VERY interesting observation about this to me is - notice how they have internet and phone access in a camp? Take away the devices and the internet, what would happen? Yeah. You get my point here. The internet and mobile phones are the bondage. Think about that.
Take this example and apply it worldwide. What would happen if we all ditched our fones and the net for a set period? We would be forced to interact face to face with people we actually know. The matrix would implode in no time.

It's a combo of many things. Island nation, wealthy, very corrupt political class, strict police force, laid back Aussie attitude (because they are used to freedom, sunshine etc) They got caught flat-footed like most nations.
