I should have stated in the initial tweet - I was referring to spectators of sports more than people who take part in them. Playing sports has many benefits for the players but zero for the consumer.

I meant more the viewing of sports rather than playing, which of course has many benefits for people. The spectacular gets nothing of value.

I might be wrong but I remember reading they where invented to teach children about battles/tactics so they would ready for war later in life
