Pretty sure rubbing hands together to get warm inspired the rubbing of objects they've seen on fire before (e.g. due to lightning strikes to trees) Fear of death indeed makes one creative.
Probably nordic people who were either going to discover fire, or freeze to death in the winter. The fear of death is great motivation tool for innovation.

Lightning. They just passed the flame from here to there until, like 1926, when matches were born. The rock and stick methods were invented by hobos during the Great Depression because matches were in short supply and like $7 each.
