I get the impression Lawrence lived abroad for a while before going to latAM, he is used to not being based in the UK. It's easier for an experienced travelling man to set himself up, than some middle-aged geezer who has never lived abroad.

The idea of packing up and moving to a new country is a foreign concept (no pun intended) to somebody who has always lived in the UK and is used to the way of life etc, even if they get shafted with a much higher tax rate.

This is common in insular populations like the UK The feeling of being in an island makes the whole world look more separated for obvious reasons, but it runs DEEP into one's psyche.

Basically. In the UK. You pay a premium to stay here because the society is living on the fumes of the old British empire. People take pride in the Ghosts of the past achievements.

Understandable of course. You can see the same process as an individual. In people who have some sort of achievement, only to then live on the memories of the "good old times". I like taking the macro into the micro and vice versa.
