Secret police - THREAD - Secret police are special security forces who tend to operate outwith the normal laws and they are symbolic of authoritarian regimes. The first known secret police force was called the "Jinyiwei" way back in ancient China around 1360. They carried out/pic.twitter.com/JBBWj10TQf

secret arrests, trials without any crime being committed, personal protection of the emperor, spying on, and crushing any political dissidents. Assassinations were commonplace. Ironically their HQ in Beijing was Tian’anmen Square/pic.twitter.com/BZHyR44DKv

Moving forward to 1950 and we have the infamous Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (MfS) Stasi for short. These guys took the whole secret police thing to a new level. They had a MASSIVE network of "informal employees" aka snitches who would monitor every aspect of life in the GDR/

which was the official name of the East German Socialist USSR satellite state. The efficiency of data collection and digging citizens personal information was astounding, even way before cell phones and the internet was mainstream, these guys knew EVERYTHING/

They even had a special machine that would reseal the glue on letters before they got posted to people's homes. They also carried out a psychological warfare technique known as "zersetzung" which means "decomposition"/pic.twitter.com/Xyy08KTMk1

This method would crush the self-esteem and confidence of potential dissidents, by spreading malicious rumors around their family, friends, and workplaces. The Stasi was a modern secret police force, they preferred to paralyze a target over just beating them up and arresting them

The current Russian leader Vladimir Putin was a KGB officer and while stationed in East Germany he was involved with the Stasi as they reported directly to the KGB in Moscow/pic.twitter.com/QkAuRxDEai

Once the Berlin wall came down and the Stasi had disbanded all the files & personal info they had on East German citizens were made available and compensation was paid to the victims of the "zersetzung" campaigns, as they were left completely broken by the mind games/

The scary part was - The Stasi has under 100K employees at its peak, however, they had way over 150k Informal staff, so people were just being tattle taled by their neighbors, work colleges, etc. It's very dangerous to "go along to get along" and it can become out of control/

Very quickly. In modern times secret police forces are still active, China has the MSS, North Korea has its own version. Picture men in black uniforms who can operate outwith any law and have full carte blanch over the whole population. It tends to be psychopaths they recruit/

To work and run these organizations. It takes a certain type of character to crave this level of control over others. The population always fear them as they have a reputation for extreme violence.
