I respect that you noted the option. One need not be ruthless to engender respect. Imposing change can be ruthless, forwarding desires can manifest ruthlessly. Kings, dictators, generals, surrounded by advisors afraid to lose control, turn to ruthlessness yet other options remain
Ruthlessness is victory. It pays to be a dickhead in life sometimes. Nobody respects (fears) a spineless man.

Yes. But the hard line always seems to yield the best results in most cases (not all) For me it's about not being a monster but showing strength in an instant if required. This is leadership.
