Even with parts of the process automated, mapping 25,000 neurons in the fly
#hemibrain has taken huge amounts of human effort. More than 100 people have been involved, including teams who proofread neural reconstructions produced by computers. https://www.janelia.org/news/unveiling-the-biggest-and-most-detailed-map-of-the-fly-brain-yet …pic.twitter.com/hGZTVbeCRM

Presenting: The most detailed map yet of the fruit fly brain. Janelia’s FlyEM team has traced the paths of some 25,000 neurons in the fruit fly brain and pinpointed the places where they connect. Now, all the data is available online for free. https://www.janelia.org/news/unveiling-the-biggest-and-most-detailed-map-of-the-fly-brain-yet …

A new microscope technique shows cells’ fine structure in new detail. The method, developed by Eric Betzig, Harald Hess + colleagues, combines 3D super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy in whole cells. This week in Nature: The latest paper from
@bsauerbrei1,@AdamHantman, and colleagues shows that the motor cortex needs ongoing patterned feedback to guide mice through making dexterous movements, like reaching to grab something. https://www.janelia.org/news/inputs-to-the-motor-cortex-make-dexterous-movements-possible-in-mice …pic.twitter.com/nmaT9jJbio -

Janelia scientists Philipp Keller and Kate McDole have been awarded 5th place in the Nikon Small World in Motion competition. Their winning entry shows the inside of a developing mouse embryo as the neural plate (which later gives rise to the brain and spinal cord) elongates.pic.twitter.com/4azVq64c6C

This imaging platform brings together 3D super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy—and it works on whole cells preserved cryogenically. It’s revealing the fine inner structure of cells in new detail. Read (and watch) more here: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/773986v1 …pic.twitter.com/8UqWhpaL5h
