Good news! Compared to the same period last year, in the first two months of 2020: - Twice as many marriages were concluded - 8,8% more children were born - Fertility rate increased by 8,4% (from 1,43 to 1,55) - Number of abortions dropped by more than a third #FamilyFirstpic.twitter.com/bnpsRMLO1Q

Congrats on the birth rate & fall of abortions. But when family allowances come in the form of cheap loans with a precondition of marriage, an increase is hardly a surprise. Isn't this policy risky in a country where households are indebted and 2/3 of marriages end in divorce?

Thank you for the recognition.Divorces haven’t been as low as last year in the last 6 decades. Loans are taken by adults that want to start a family and they can be reduced by bearing children. Loan is written off when 3. child arrives e.g. in the case of baby expecting subsidy

This is perhaps why all Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swiss and Swedish citizens want to come and earn their income in Hungary, and spend it at home:)

So the conclusion is? Should the gov not incentivize marriage due to high divorce rate? Would be a terrific family policy for sure...

The conclusion is simple: in a normal society people get married & bear children because they feel well, comfortable & secure in the broadest sense. And not because there's a well propagated loan that provides an incentive to buy a bigger car, adding to the cumulative debt load.

The households are much less indebted than during the Gyurcsany DK era 2004-2010, and growth in birth rates shows confidence in the steady economic growth. Its not a “cheap loan”. Its called “affordable loan” - interest rates from 8-10% in 2010 are down to 3-4%. #progress

The Gyurcsány era shouldn't serve as a comparison. It isn't by coincidence that they failed miserably. The Orbán gov had a historic opportunity to change course in econ policy, but they didn't. This is why you cite GDP growth and not real wage figures as a measurement.
