Obviously the last year hasn’t provided a normal box office metric, but by any standard, Fennell is hot property after PYW. By rights, studios should be calling her up and asking what she wants to do next, and how they can help. It’s all backwards.

One reply I’m getting a lot in response to this, in various forms, is “many filmmakers don’t just want to make small movies” — and yes, they don’t! But look how we’ve let the industry narrow our ideas of what a big, and indeed big-budget, movie can be.

Well, McQueen and DuVernay both recently turned to TV to make the most ambitious work of their respective careers. Jenkins too, after which he’s making a Lion King sequel for Disney, which isn’t far off the superhero trajectory.
