Considering Charles Murray's new book comes out tomorrow it's good timing that this little side-project I took on (in the middle of my comprehsensive exams!) just came out.

“If you’re a philosopher of science, you probably don’t take Popper’s philosophy seriously. But if you’re...a scientist, there is a pretty good chance that you think you agree with Karl Popper. I am here to explain to you that no, you probably do not”

"current research culture is characterized by significant pressure to present research projects as conclusive narratives that leave no room for ambiguity" "The pressure to produce such clean narratives, however, represents a significant threat to validity"

We're interested in finding a social-behavioural task that measures adherence to social norms. Preferably pre-existing norms in the culture, but group-generated norms are also fine. Does anyone know of any suitable tasks?

This debunked finding keeps coming back. Humans are at least as good at this task as the chimpanzees. It's a practice effect. See replies in the thread. Good television makes for bad theorizing.

If you use MTurk for your research 👏 PAY 👏 PEOPLE 👏 AN 👏 ADEQUATE 👏 WAGE! Or use better services like that actually mandate it. (In light of this harrowing piece that all social science researchers should read & take to heart)

Thanks for setting me up for this sweet dunk! I can't jump high, but will try my best. I've seen some variant of this factoid approximately a zillion times. Chomsky's point however, is that the premises upon which studies like these are based are flawed. 1/7

Scientific racism, a thread: In March, a journal published a paper defending the “theory” that Boasian anthropology, Freudian psychology, multiculturalism, Marxism and left-wing political movements in general are best understood in terms of “Jewish group evolutionary strategy.”

No evidence for the "theory that physical disgust via taste perception harshens judgments of moral wrongness" from a well done pre-registered replication by multiple labs. Read 's thread for an explanation why this is important!

Just like the do every year, horses from Berte farm in Yakutia swim to a lush and secure island pasture in the middle of river Lena in late spring. Early in September they swim back - first the strongest of stallions, then mares and foals. Video courtesy Vitaly Ivanov

Fascinating new study showing that Tsimane forager-farmers have a cultural lifestyle that is more market integrated than previously understood, that this integration differs by gender, & that market integration has important implications for how we understand health measures
