Yes, it is 80 years since I published the first observational evidence that the world was warming, and suggested that CO2 from burning fossil fuels was at least partly responsible.

Another fantastic figure from Ed! Note the addition of natural factors (volcanic eruptions, solar Maunder minimum) as well as human factors: invention of the steam engine, when (Ed's alter ego) first documented the warming of the planet due to burning fossil fuels.

📈🌍On the basis of previous theories, in 1938, English inventor discovered by correlating world with atmospheric CO₂ concentrations. He suggested that increase in atmospheric was partly responsible.

81 years ago I was the first to show that CO2 levels in the atmosphere were increasing due to burning fossil fuels, and that global land temperatures were observed to be warming as a consequence. EIGHTY-ONE YEARS.

Round 4: Question 2 of 5 comes from professor of climate science at (2 points)

Who was first scientist to discover that the world's land areas were warming? And when was the paper published?

Today, the world seems to have finally realised what I first discovered back in 1938. The world is warming. That is because of our CO2 emissions, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels. Simple.

Now I'm ready for a bit of evidence-based protesting, with a bit of help from !

In 1938 I was the first person to demonstrate that Earth’s global land temperatures were warming. I had access to data from 147 stations. The trends I calculated for 1880-1935 are very similar to those estimated today for the same period.

Except we’ve understood the physics of how CO2 warms the atmosphere since ’s experiments in the 1850s. Arrhenius made first estimates of climate sensitivity in 1896. first attributed observed warming due to CO2 in 1938.

Would really love to see it. Also cheering/fun to see Tyndall and Callendar chatting on here. Makes me think I should set up FitzRoy’s twitter so we could have a proper meteorological club.

The Canadian-Britain engineer (1898-1964) was the first scientist who collected world temperature measurements and suggested that this warming was related to carbon dioxide emissions.

In 1861 John Tyndall quantified the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide - today the brilliant will reconstruct that famous experiment for with & myself explain the challenge of climate change

So, today I’m going to to help , , & with their climate change event. Hoping to see the live recreation of ’s 1861 experiment demonstrating physics of greenhouse effect. Climate science is old.
