I like that "R" approach. We talk about it here as well with the teams. It's all about 'delivering results'. It won't always be easy, it will be difficult. You have to find what moves the needle. Investigation is key. Competitive analysis equally important.
I agree. They have to have a passion for learning and the skillset they're working in or they just won't do anything but "punch a timeclock" and "put in their time". It's all about the right attitude. You can train anyone to do anything if they truly are interested in what they are doing and learning. It's actually way easier then! I love it when they start thinking outside the box and really get hands dirty or come back with recommendations!
