I missed this: It depends on what you want to do with in the world of analytics. I wanted to learn from start to finish how the information was transformed from raw data to specialized reports. I like knowing that I could pull data and do something with it not just read a report.

knowing code also gave me better insight in what is and isn't possible, constraints, what information is available for consumption. This makes me a better marketer, more empathetic/understanding of analysts, and I can then give clients realistic expectations.

I hated when the sales staff would go out and sign a client only to find out they promissed them things we weren't capable of fulfilling. It was a very bad look for the company. I don't want to do that when I create a marketing plan.
