Another share on this, as a contribution to the post-election analysis bout. (And because I think it's a good piece, and you - yes, you - should read it.)

  2. The cost of a car economy to a state like Massachusetts, with 1/10th the population of Britain, comes out to £50bn. Translated we would expect costs to be somewhere in the order of £500bn, or 1/5th of GDP, *every year*. This is nuts.

Pete Buttigieg is this election’s poster child for “progressive neoliberalism” — offering up platitudes about diversity while leaving untouched the very structures that oppress people. It’s time we left this kind of politics in the past.

  7. Now I'm torn between "the Dem establishment are stealing Bernie's votes" and "the tech industry is inherently monumentally stupid". Sooooo torn. Gah.

  9. A philosophical note: It's very dangerous to take metaphors too literally. Left-Right is a metaphor and doesn't necessarily represent an actual spectrum. Failing to recognise that leads to nonsense like this.

  10. I know this referencing somethine serious but: a) this is mesmerising. b) what the ever loving sod is this creature? Those feet aren't rat feet and it doesn't have a tail.

  11. For my money the reason people on the left hate the centre is that instinctively we know that they're like this, sitting around making excuses for whatever they feel like saying at the time. The right at least has principles. Libs? Self-serving BS stacked on self-serving BS.

Capitalism is so good that it has only existed for 0.00000011% of the Earth's life, but during that time it's threatened a mass extinction event.

Paw Marx, the cat that visits our front doorstep and always has a word or two to say, said this morning, 'Same old, same old'. I said, 'Same old what?' And he said, 'Oh, you know, inequality, blame the poor, blame the foreigner, have you got any more of those catty-bix?'

  15. I'm wondering how long it will take before the Brexiters look around and are forced to ask themselves "This is it?" The bad stuff will happen at exactly the same slow pace it always has, the good stuff will never appear and then... nothing. Brexit as metaphor for entropy?

related: I think one v bad trend in politics is how groups of engaged voters are increasingly berated for just advocating and voting for the things they want. non-politicians are increasingly expected to behave like millions of little political strategists trying to win elections

This will ruin many people's lives and will achieve nothing. I long for the day when austerity is seen as akin to old superstitious practices like human sacrifices because that's essentially what it is. Instead the media presents it as 'credible on the economy'.

Austerity is essentially a policy of choosing to have a higher unemployment rate than we have currently. With few inflationary pressures and public services already in crisis, it's wanton vandalism.

Michael Sandel makes an underappreciated point about why markets appeal to certain kinds of politicians. It's because markets let you avoid having to have answers to difficult political questions. It's why it's very instructive that centrists/liberals are so fond of procedure.
