The Health Minister & the Prime Minister’s office have been briefed on the situation in Western Australia by the Acting Chief Medical Officer. The PM has also spoken to the WA Premier. At this stage one case has been confirmed with widespread testing & contact tracing underway.
Whilst Australia has strong protections in place, given the nature of the overall global pandemic we have repeatedly said that there would inevitably be cases and localised outbreaks at some point, be it Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne or elsewhere.
Four States have recently been tested with outbreaks, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. All have taken appropriate action to effectively manage these outbreaks. We are confident that Western Australia will also be able to control the current outbreak.
The coming days will be difficult for many Western Australians and we thank them for their patience and cooperation as we all work to fight this virus.

Although, according to the Lowy report, it is because our states have been able to act like a collection of small countries that we have been relatively successful against Covid. Perhaps we should acknowledge this

All true. This is a terrible virus. It's better to take measures to stop it that go too far than to take measures that don't go far enough.
So one case in Perth, and Queensland already slams the door on WA and people from WA can't travel to Queensland. Australia is dysfunctional, has no central government, and you can't book a flight to anywhere with more than a few hours' notice. Care to comment, Minister?
