Great news. Bi-partisan support to reform skyrocketing property taxes that sometimes force seniors out of their homes. #txlege https://twitter.com/ninolucidogop/status/992868127615717381 …

Seniors have property tax exemptions in Texas. No need to be forced out of homes. If they are poorer, they have more.pic.twitter.com/nNwSOryI9r

Unfortunately, it does not help much if real estate taxes are so high to start with. It is plain reality in our home state of Texas.

Texas has high taxes because we don’t have a state tax, and we need to provide funds for public schools, city and county services, hospitals, firefighters, police, public libraries, emergency medical services, county roads.

Nor it does Florida and real estate taxes are reasonable and accommodating for seniors. This is why most seniors move to Florida - other than the wheather.

What I can see is that homes are cheaper in Texas than in Florida. The higher taxes in Texas are in the Ft. Worth-Dallas area. If your house is paid for in Texas, it will cost you more. Some people move from here when they retire.

Yes, in some areas of Florida houses are indeed more expensive than in Texas. However, as an average, you find very affordable housing in Florida - other than in the big metro areas - as you do in Texas. The point is that you should not be taxed out of your home.

That can be changed if appropriate legislative measures are passed.

Abbott depends on our property taxes rising so that the legislature can skim millions of our school tax $$ to fund other budget items. His plan is to keep local govts from being able to provide services the STATE mandates, while refusing to admit state’s fault for proptax issue.

I'm retired and not sixty five, the property taxes are 1/5 th of my pension. They are high for anyone in my tax bracket.

It was the reason I had to sell my home. The taxes were too high and I couldn't afford them. I have no children and I was paying without representation.

This is so much needed. Real estate taxes are necessary but must be balanced not to tax people out of their homes. Cities must primarily derive most of their income from businesses and then homeowners. Also, cities must spend wisely the tax payers’ money.
