Lowering property taxes means fixing school finance and ending mandatory state spending via unfunded mandates from the Legislature. These are the drivers of property tax increases. #txlege #254Strong http://county.org/magazine/features/Pages/May%202017/Unfunded-Mandates.aspx …pic.twitter.com/R66SfDCUNY

70% of the local tax bill is school taxes. Fix school finance and we can lower local taxes. State portion use to be 45% now it is 37%. Shifting the burden to local tax payers is not reform.

Have to apologize. My State share percentage is wrong. It’s not 37% it’s 33% and by 2019 it will be 31.8%.

Let’s lower property tax. Let’s insist the state govt adequately fund public ed & Stop using recapture to fund state budget.

In addition to recapture dollars, increases in local property values decreases the states financial commitment to schools. ISDs could lower tax rates if the state maintained their level of funding. To talk property tax relief and not maintain financial commitment is not tuthful

How much lower would local property taxes be if the state paid 50% and locals paid 50% of school funding? Is 50% a “fair” percent for the State to cover their constitutional requirement? How many Billions is the State diverting to non-Pub Ed expenses through recapture? #txlege

Property taxes are being used as a state revenue source as our local school tax dollars are siphoned off to fund other avenues of state government. Let school tax go to the schools and let’s use the revenue as it is intended and how it is levied.

And hold school districts accountable for their expenditures. A Brownsville ISD report found “corruption at every level” some years ago and there still hasn’t been *any* action! In fact, a director called “incompetent” on the report was elected to the school board!

The State of Texas holds schools accountable financially in many ways such as the FIRST rating which requires every district to hold a public hearing on the state of the district financially. Every district is required to have an annual audit and have a public release/ publish.

Feel free to stop using the services of people who attended public school. Cashiers, Servers, Auto techs, Computer techs, Electricians, Contractors, Police, Firefighters, Medical providers, Tax preparers, even (ugh) politicians. YOU (and all others) benefit from those schools.

So vote if you don’t like the outcome. Legislature needs to stay out of local politics. Services costs money. Property taxes are high because the Lege has been negligent in funding education.
