Last time I checked, the lottery pays for less than 2% of public ed in Texas.

And why do taxpayers need to fund a water park owned by a Tx public ISD that receives recapture payments? Educational value?
-
They shouldn’t have to when other school districts can’t even keep their doors open. But Abbott, like always, is passing the buck. La Joya has that surplus of money because
#txlege has done nothing but ask for study after study. All talk, no action re:school finance.#VoteThemOut -
Understand your frustration. But how long has recapture been a part of our school finance system. How did it become part of the school finance system. Why does it impact our school finance system in the way that it does

“The state’s over-reliance on local property tax revenue prevents school districts from lowering tax rates, is leading to growing recapture payments, and allows the state to direct dollars otherwise intended for education to other expenses.”http://bettertexasblog.org/2017/07/texas-relies-much-local-taxpayers-fund-public-education/ …

Are you saying that the “Legislature” is appropriating property tax money for local schools. Or, is it that property values are increasing statewide and the school finance models have the state effort decreasing as property values increasing?
-
The 2nd option. They began cutting funding for public ed and haven’t stopped.pic.twitter.com/7syB34TLS2

Again, as values increase from district to district state effort will decrease. Now, which district to you pay school property taxes?
-
I told you. Richardson ISD. I fundamentally disagree with most of the burden for public education being placed on the local taxpayer through property taxes when the state constitution clearly dictates that the state is responsible in Article 7, Section 1.

Robin Hood is a result of the Legislature’s failure, not sure what you are boasting about.

Just wow! If a district is receiving money through the Robin Hood program and they can afford a water park, something is desperately wrong! What does that have to do with education?

Don’t act like this isn’t the fault of the TX Leg! Fix school funding! Obviously that ISD doesn’t need more money but maybe a school that has a part time nurse, a part time counselor and 25 kids in a classroom does. You and

“The water park is the only state-owned facility of its kind.” Isn’t this where you use an anecdote because the facts aren’t on your side?

My wife is an elementary school teacher in Harlingen, about 20 minutes from La Joya. The struggle is real. We have to use our own money to buy the supplies she needs to facilitate and teach 23 students.
@GregAbbott_TX please stop this nonsense and misuse of taxpayer's money. - 1 more reply

You’ve been saying that for a while now
This article really doesn’t paint you in a good light Mr. Abbott. You’ve been overseeing a flawed system for years but have done nothing about it. Seems like you’re not good at your job & need to be released #TxLege@Texans4E#blockvote - 1 more reply

Oh, it’s ok to stereotype all districts when convenient. Your school finance system is broken. Your own folks are projecting a 12-14% increase in property taxes when estimating next biennium’s budget. The state saves money as a result and spends it outside of public ed.
