Theory: the media did a wonderful job sniping at Biden in small ways (Kamala!) while preventing him from utterly falling down (Hunter isn't a story!). Such treatment doesn't politically inoculate you. It just slows the disease long enough to kill you at the exact worst time.

I wonder if any of the same journalists praising Romney to the heavens right now realize that the way they smeared him in 2012 is partly what enabled the rise of Trump. A swath of the GOP watched a guy run, get smeared, and lose. And they concluded “punching back” was necessary.

The White House should simply acknowledge that Romney had his point of view, that they think he's wrong, that the majority of the Senate thinks he's wrong, and move on. Prolonging a firefight the media are DROOLING for would be political malpractice.

Romney is a Senator elected by the people of his state; his independent judgment is as legitimate as that of anyone else. Even though Trump's Ukraine behavior was thoroughly bad and stupid, Romney is wrong about impeachment. But that's about it. He is not a traitor or a buffoon.
