I believe the Moto G line Android OS is pretty close to the same as AOSP. Also interested to hear thoughts on providing a recovery flashable zip (thinking TWRP flashing) to install the OS. Ease of use is really going to drive privacy adoption.
GrapheneOS uses verified boot and needs to be installed via fastboot mode. There's no other way to flash the custom verified boot key and then lock the bootloader. It also uses a secure recovery image. Verified boot and delta updates aren't compatible with mixing/matching images.
We're planning on having a web-based flashing tool using WebUSB like https://flash.android.com/ . We also plan to endorse trusted sellers of devices with GrapheneOS. Support for non-Pixel devices is also planned but devices have to meet our privacy, security and other requirements.
Broad device support is explicitly not a goal of the project. The privacy and security it offers cannot be achieved on most devices. The OS builds on the security offered by the hardware. Similarly, privacy features like https://grapheneos.org/usage#wifi-privacy … often involve hardware / firmware.
