These builds can be run with the emulator included in the source tree without having a device for testing. The aosp_x86_64 target is a good choice. The emulator defaults to using KVM and GPU acceleration via the host GPU so performance is perfectly fine with a proper environment.
These build targets aren't suitable for production usage due to the lack of the baseline security features and support. They're being supported to lower the barrier to entry for contributors. The project needs the community to step up and the short term focus is enabling that.
