Network port 6112 was used by early Blizzard games such as StarCraft and Warcraft 3. In case you didn't know, the number was chosen simply because it looks like 'bliz' (6112).

I guess it's possible that the story was invented, but I have it from someone who was there at the time, so it seems credible enough to me. I didn't know that WoW used it too, that's cool.
