sorry I'm late to the party folks, rough internet today. At her press conference Whitmer, "we've got more work to do" amid massive case spike in MI

"This is my ask to you as the people of Michigan. Please, redouble your efforts" - Whitmer asks

That was quite the flurry of mixing sportsball metaphors

Whitmer says a good summer, July 4th and normal life are within reach as long as people get vaccinated.

Dr. Khaldun up now, she says the state is on track to match or surpass the case spike of the fall of 2020 and the surge from last spring, when we were doing fewer testing
Show this thread -
Khaldun, she says there's likely an undercount of cases because contact tracing is difficult and the spread is so wide right now. "We are all connected and we're in this together" she says

Khaldun, now leaning on the CDC's new guidelines that youth sports pause for 2 weeks, but again no new orders from the state
Show this thread -
Khaldun says the state does not recommend indoor dining, saying it's one of the most dangerous things you can do right now
Show this thread -
-
Until everyone is vaccinated, Khaldun reiterates the social distancing, mask wearing guidelines.

Just some background on the vaccine vs case race. Vaccinations don't automatically stop community spread. There's also a 2 week lag before full inoculation for those with a full dose...
Show this thread -
What has shown to stop spread, or at the very least be highly correlated to stopping spread is restricting indoor dining and close contact settings. The state is only asking people to make the right choice, not ordering it.

aaand here's some reporting from
@statnews on the Biden Admin response to Whitmer's calls for a a "vaccine surge"https://www.statnews.com/2021/04/08/michigan-covid-surge-biden-officials-no-additional-vaccine-doses/?utm_content=buffer4e28c&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=twitter_organic …Show this thread -
Whitmer asked why only recommend, not require pause. She says "It's less a policy problem... a compliance and variant problem now"
Show this thread -
Asked if it's a compliance problem, why would people comply with her only asking? She says people are more optimistic, "snow birds" are coming back and more variants are out there...
Show this thread -
"No one is free from getting this virus unless you've gotten this vaccine" she says without really answering the question.
Show this thread -
She was also asked if she's so close to the President why isn't that relationship helping us here? She says the state is going to continue to fight for more vaccines. "I believe a surge strategy is prudent, equitable and important"
Show this thread -
"It's about equity, it's about strategy. I think it's the right thing to do." Whitmer says she's been talking with other governors who are also concerned.
Show this thread -
She says Michigan is usually at the front of these kinds of case spikes. I'll be going back to see if that's actually true
Show this thread -
Whitmer is asked what the timeline is for vaccines to start outpacing cases. She says it's anticipated that if vaccines come as expected, without setbacks or lulls in demand, the middle of May could be 70 percent vaccinated. She says it's not "highly likely" though
Show this thread -
She says the real date is probably closer to the 4th of July.
